Project Description
The Countryside Orphanage in Bawjiase cares for approximately 120 orphaned or abandoned children and is run by approximately 10 adult carers. All cooking is prepared using firewood stoves, costing the orphanage approximately $300 per month. Only a handful of the buildings have any form of light, and none of the 12 classrooms have lighting of any kind. In addition, there is no lighting on the pathways around the orphanage grounds, which is especially troublesome given that there are snakes at night time.
To date, energy4everyone has provided equipment to the orphanage on three occasions and funds were used to purchase and donate a total of six large energy efficient charcoal cook stoves, six 12 volt solar lanterns each powered by a 7-watt solar panel, two D.Light Nova solar lanterns, 10 D.Light Kiran S11 solar lanterns, and 20 hand powered flashlights.
Positive Impact
The efficient cook stoves enable the orphanage to discontinue its dependence on firewood. This saves the orphanage money, as the cost of firewood is approximately three times more expensive than charcoal, and is healthier as the efficient cook stoves produce less smoke than the firewood stoves.
The solar lanterns increase the lighting sources available to the orphanage, and enabling some of the children to study after dark.
