Project Description

Throughout northern Nicaragua people have reduced access to modern energy. As a result, for cooking, many communities use firewood as one of their primary energy sources. In addition to an increased rate of deforestation and CO2 emissions, the use of firewood also leads to health problems from the inhalation of smoke, negative impact upon children’s education levels as they have to take time to collect firewood instead, and reduced income generating opportunities because of the time required to collect wood.

Change for Children designed and developed a project, which has also received funding from CIDA, as part of a large ranging community project that also introduced solar water pumping and solar ovens to the communities.

Positive Impact

The funds provided were used to purchase a large portion of the energy equipment for the first year of the total project, including 142 efficient wood ovens (‘eco stoves’), one solar water pumping system, two 7.5HP electrical grid power water pumping systems and five solar ovens. The average family size in the region is 8 people, so in total, e4e’s funding helped provide improved access to modern energy for approximately 3,830 people.
