Project Description
Peru has a population of 27.4mil, of which 6.6mil (24%) live in rural areas. As of 2007, 7.1mil (26%) Peruvians did not have access to electricity; 4.9mil of these live in rural areas. This equates to 1.65mil households without electric light.
e4e’s funding was utilized by LUTW to support the establishment of a regional office in Peru. Establishing a regional office was critical for LUTW to maximize its operational impact in the region.
Positive Impact
The funds provided were also used to purchase and install 10-watt/12V solar PV lighting systems in 34 homes and one community building in the village of Chayansa and 35 homes in Pallccapampa located in Apurimac. 12 local villagers (6 in both communities) received training on solar PV systems. Other project activities that were financed by e4e include conducting baseline surveys, system design, training, project management, and monitoring and evaluation visits. Of those homeowners that LUTW was able to meet with claimed that they were no longer spending any money on other sources of light (i.e. batteries) for their homes. Savings were spent primarily on purchasing additional food. Overall, everyone was positive, happy and systems are functioning well.
